”Unbound” is the most recent in a series of self portraits. As of late my works have been a heavier reflection of my personal struggles with depression and the constant anxiety over the current state of our small world. I often escaped into printmaking to process feelings and reflect on my inner consciousness. The process involved in creating these pieces requires planning and patient execution. This space becomes meditative and healing.
With “Unbound”, I sought to free myself from the restraints of my ruminations and instead embrace a more optimistic thought of weightlessness. This large 36”x60” woodblock was carved through September and October 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic and the contentious 2020 presidential election. The carving itself provided a much needed respite and the image was finally printed with Big Ink Prints on 11/07/2020, on the day the election results were revealed. – Drew Carroll
