Title: Developing Your Design

Time: 2:13

Summary: Learn to create an image design fit to carve.

[INTRO: MUSIC PLAYING]

Good image preparation is vital.

When an idea pops into my head, I create quick thumbnails,

adding and rearranging shapes to these drafts.

When satisfied, I redraw the sketch in more detail.

First with a pencil, and then with pen and ink.

I mirror the design on my phone to see if anything looks out of place.

Here are tips to remember as you are working.

Think in terms of black and white, positive and negative space.

Remove gray scale and flip the image horizontally

with editing software or a photocopier.

Your carving will appear reversed when printed.

So always carve any text backward.

A scanner and printer are handy

if you want to keep a part of the design while making adjustments to others.

Use a daylight window or light box for tracing.

I recommend inverting the image. If your design has a lot of white space.

You will carve less, it will be easier to print,

and the lines will stand out against the black.

Look at relief prints that resonate with you

and think about how you can blend styles to make your design.

Pencil – amazon.com
Graph Gear 1000 Automatic Drafting Pencil, 0.7mm Lead Size. A classic wooden pencil with HB lead is okay, too!

Sketch Paper – amazon.com
Multipurpose Copy Printer Paper, 20 Pound, White, 96 Brightness. Your instructor carries a five-by-seven-inch sketchbook with a similar paper type when he travels.

Ballpoint Pen – amazon.com
BIC Cristal Xtra Smooth Ballpoint Pen, Medium Point. Your instructor recommends it for drawing on paper and wood. Avoid gel-based pens because the ink smears easily.

Sharpie – amazon.com
Sharpie Permanent Marker Fine Point

India Ink – amazon.com
Speedball Super Black India Ink

Sable Brushes – amazon.com
Any sable brushes will do; experiment with making marks with India Ink.

Brush Pen – amazon.com
Pentel Fude Brush Pen, Medium

Lightbox – amazon.com
ME456 A4 LED Light Box 9×12 Inch Light Pad

The printing process mirrors your carved design. Hence, this is the reason always to carve text backward. You can anticipate this flip digitally and check if adjustments must be made before carving. These steps are performed on an iPhone XR.
