Title: Transparent Acetate Image Transfer
Time: 06:41
Summary: Learn to transfer a sketch onto your woodblock with a transparent acetate sheet.
[INTRO: MUSIC PLAYING]
Transferring an exceptionally detailed sketch
will take time using carbon paper,
I’ve developed an alternative method using clear acetate
and an inkjet printer.
First, sand the surface of the wood
using 220-grit extra fine sandpaper.
Either a sanding block or an orbital sander works well.
Wipe away the sawdust using a water-dampened rag
and let the plywood dry completely.
The surface should feel glassy and smooth.
Rub the acetate in circular motions
with a dry paper towel.
Scan the image at 72 DPI and save it as a jpeg.
Open the JPEG in Adobe Photoshop Elements
Editor like I have here.
and then image size.
Adjust the dimensions to match the piece
of wood you’ve prepared for carving, and click
okay. Click enhance
and adjust lighting, and then levels.
Use the slider to increase the images, contrast,
and eliminate all gray tones.
Click the padlock to unlock the background layer
and then reduce the image opacity to 70%.
Then click file and save as.
Select Photoshop PDF in the format dropdown
menu, and click save.
Select JPEG compression and high image quality.
Tick the box that asks about viewing the PDF automatically
after saving and click save PDF.
The PDF should automatically open in Acrobat.
Most computers already have this program,
but if not, it is available on Adobe’s website.
Click file and print.
Under page size
and handling select Poster for image enlargement.
Check the box labeled cut marks.
Click the printer button at the bottom left corner
under Media & Quality.
Select Photo Glossy Paper,
and you want the print quality to be Normal.
Then click Print, and then you’re going
to click Print again.
Load clear, 8 1/2″
by 11″ sheets of acetate into the inkjet printer.
Please note that this process will not work
with a laser printer. Over several minutes
the printer will lay ink on the acetate sheet’s surface.
Lay each sheet of acetate face down against the wood
as soon as it comes out of the printer.
Take care not to shift the sheet during placement.
Apply hand pressure to the back of the acetate
and move in one direction.
Most of the ink will transfer to the wood.
Gently lift a corner to check.
Lift the sheet away from the wood
and continue this process one sheet at a time
using the cut marks to help align the tiles.
Rinse used sheets under the tap
using warm water.
The water removes residual ink.
Immediately blot away the water using a paper towel
and store the acetate for reuse.
Here are a few tips to consider.
If the machine prints quickly and the ink bleeds
make sure Photo Glossy Paper is selected.
If the image doesn’t transfer well, check
that the wood is well sanded
and the design is in high contrast.
Thank you for watching, and happy printing!

FAQS
Q: I am looking for some advice on purchasing an inkjet printer. The video features the Brother brand. Do you recommend it? Which model do you have?
Castonguay has used Brother Brand printers for years without any issues. As of 4/9/24, the newest version of the model he owns is MFC-J1010DW.
