[INTRO: MUSIC PLAYING]
Woodblock, also known as woodcut,
is a form of relief printmaking.
I created my first relief print in art school and immediately fell in love
with the process.
You carve a piece of wood using small chisels to create a relief
print like a stamp.
The raised areas constitute the printable design.
The concept is simple,
but you can create a fantastic variety of marks.
Ink is applied to the raised areas with a specialized rubber roller and
then transferred onto the paper using either hand rubbing or a press.
A press is helpful,
but when I graduated from college and did not have access to a studio,
I created many hand rubbed prints at home.
Each person carves differently,
and part of the fun is expressing your style.
Some people prefer cutting lines, some prefer textures,
or a combination of both. This course will include many approaches.
Observing different artistic styles can help you learn what you prefer.
